Christina’s Journey: From General Dentistry to Orthodontics
Christina’s path to Cruz Orthodontics began in general dentistry, where she worked as a dental assistant right out of school. When her doctor retired after 18 months, Christina found herself at a crossroads that ultimately led her to discover her true calling in orthodontics.
“I was blessed to go ahead and find a position as a scheduling coordinator for an orthodontic practice. And then from there, I just excelled from position to position,” Christina shares. Her natural talent for patient care and administration quickly became apparent, leading to her current role as treatment coordinator at Cruz Orthodontics, where she’s been thriving for almost a year.
The Magic of Orthodontic Moments
What Makes the Job Special
When asked about her favorite part of the job, Christina’s enthusiasm is infectious:
“What I love most about the job is that when a patient gets their braces off, we get to clap for them, with the song. And so I really look forward to that because it’s a special moment for them. And I feel so special just to be able to be a part of that.”

Every Patient Has a Story
Christina recognizes that orthodontic treatment often addresses more than just alignment issues:
“It’s a sensitive subject for most patients. So when they come see me or Doctor Cruz are looking for his expertise. They need help. So maybe it’s a child that’s getting bullied at school… or what if it’s a mom that’s treated all her children with orthodontics, and now it’s her turn.”
Each patient’s journey is unique, and Christina understands the emotional significance of orthodontic treatment in building confidence and improving quality of life.
The Art of Building Trust in Limited Time
A Critical Skill in Patient Care
One of the most challenging aspects of Christina’s role is something many people might not realize: building meaningful connections with patients and families in a very short timeframe.
“I have only about 30 to 40 minutes to connect with these families. Sometimes a little bit less… to get all of their backgrounds. What brings them in today? Their interest. And I really have to kind of build that relationship upon trust.”
This skill is crucial in orthodontics, where treatment decisions require confidence and trust between the patient, family, and treatment team. Christina manages this challenge while seeing an average of 6-10 patients daily, balancing new patient examinations with observation appointments.
Finding the Right Fit at Cruz Orthodontics
Christina’s interview process at Cruz Orthodontics felt natural and comfortable from the start. Meeting with Julie at reception, then Shirley the manager, and finally Dr. Cruz himself, she knew she had found the right place.
“Everything just felt right at home. I just felt that it was just the right thing to do,” Christina reflects on her decision to join the team.
Beyond the Office: Christina’s Personal Side
When she’s not helping patients achieve their dream smiles, Christina enjoys spending time with her four children and husband in beautiful San Diego. She’s also an accomplished angler who takes pride in her fishing skills—even outfishing her dad on her birthday!
Her advice for newcomers to the orthodontic field? “Keep trying your best and don’t be afraid of growth and learning new things.”
